Dementia is a form of Alzheimer’s but not always attributed to the disease itself. Alzheimer’s – this is the most common type of dementia and attributes to between 60-80% of dementia cases.
Vascular Dementia – this is the second most common type of dementia and is caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain often due to strokes or blocked arteries.
Dementia with Lewy Bodies – pattern of decline is similar to Alzheimer’s and is caused by abnormal deposits of the protein alphasynuclein.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus – this form of dementia is caused by the excess buildup of fluid in the brain and can sometimes be corrected by insertion of a shunt in the brain.
Mild cognitive impairment – this is a condition where the individual has impairment in cognitive functioning but not enough to be noticeable to others. This at times leads to dementia and others the individual can revert to normal cognitive status.
Frontotemporal Dementia – This is when there is damage to brain cells especially in the frontal lobe and side regions of the brain.
Mixed dementia – is exactly what it sounds like, a mixture of different forms of dementia.
Parkinson’s disease - Many people who have Parkinson’s disease develop dementia in the later stages of the disease.
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – Rapidly fatal disorder that impairs memory and coordination and causes behavior changes. Caused by the misfolding of prion protein throughout the brain.
